π₯ How We Scaled Our Desktop Sign Post into a 4-Foot Craft Show Display (with a Laser Cutter!)

Looking for a collapsible, lightweight, and portable porch sign stand you can laser cut yourself?
Weβve got you covered.
In this post, we're sharing how we took our tabletop laser cut sign post SVG file and scaled it to a full 4-foot tall porch post β perfect for displaying 16" interchangeable signs at craft shows, on porches, or even inside shops. π‘
π Why Scale It Up?
When we originally designed our desktop display stand, we had no idea how many people would want to scale it for:
-
π Interchangeable seasonal door signs
-
ποΈ Craft show displays
-
π‘ Front porch decor without bulky lumber
-
π A flat-pack gift idea!
So we challenged ourselves: Can we scale this design, cut it on our laser, keep it collapsible, and make it strong enough to hold a big door hanger? Letβs find out.
π¨ Supplies We Used
-
πͺ΅ Β½β Plywood (we avoided MDF for outdoor use)
-
π¨ Foxy Hues Paint β our UV-resistant, weatherproof acrylic paint
-
π§ SVG file from our shop: Download it here
-
π» Software: LightBurn
-
π₯ CO2 Laser Cutter (but a large diode laser could work too!)
π Scaling the SVG File
To scale the original desktop SVG file up to 4 feet, hereβs what we did:
-
Measured the actual thickness of our plywood β it varied slightly, so we rounded up to 0.48" to account for glue variance and paint thickness.
-
Adjusted all tabs and slots in LightBurn to match the new material thickness.
-
Sized the main post to 47β tall (to fit our material and laser bed) and kept the base wide enough for extra stability.
π Pro Tip: If you're cutting from plywood, always run a test cut first. We skipped that... and paid the price. (Spoiler: second cut worked like a charm at 70% power, 7mm/s.)
𧩠Design Features
-
Collapsible construction: Easy to assemble and disassemble with no nails required.
-
Layered base: Triple-layered for balance and wobble-free support.
-
Lightweight & laser-friendly: Unlike 4x4 lumber, this version is booth-friendly and customer-carryable.
π¨ Painting with Purpose
We sealed our post using Foxy Hues Paints, our go-to for durability. These paints are:
-
UV Resistant βοΈ
-
Weatherproof π§οΈ
-
Self-sealing π‘οΈ
We went with black to hide scuffs between craft shows and match any seasonal decor.
π² Cost Breakdown & Profit Potential
-
Plywood: ~$62/sheet (we used half) = $31
-
Paint: ~$2 worth
-
Laser time: Minimal
β‘οΈ Estimated Cost per Display Post: ~$35
β‘οΈ Suggested Retail Price: $120+ (with sign included)
Bundle it with interchangeable signs for recurring sales β customers will come back for new inserts!
